Job Description

The Geoscientist/Geochemist provides a wide range of complex technical support functions for NANA’s resource department specifically focused on geochemical work related to Red Dog mine waste rock and tailings and the Red Dog closure and reclamation plan.

 

Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work with NRC resource department staff to prioritize and execute projects related to Red Dog.
  • Develop and execute critical long term geochemical issues to investigate.
  • Analyze technical data on priority projects significant for ongoing Red Dog operations, closure and reclamation and Mine Life Extension.
  • Complete a review of existing data to assess the potential for critical and strategic minerals on NANA Red Dog lease.
  • Develop and execute on a scope for a Ph.D. in environmental geochemistry.
  • Manage any assigned employee and is responsible for training, assigning and directing work, approving time sheets, appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining, and addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • This position may have supervisory responsibilities.
  • Other duties that are pertinent to the department or unit’s success also may be assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • A Masters in geoscience, engineering, or related STEM field from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of five (5) years directly related experience.
  • Must be able to travel and work in remote locations.
  • Must be able to explain, in writing and orally, complex technical concepts to many different types of groups.
  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record to be eligible under NANA’s vehicle insurance policy.
  • Language skills sufficient to:
    • Read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.
    • Respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
    • Read and understand land title documents, maps, and public and private land records.
    • Understand and work well with groups of all sizes and individuals of different cultures
  • Mathematical skills sufficient to:
    • Work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.
    • Apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Reasoning abilities sufficient to:
    • Solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
    • Interpret and variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

 

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

Weather: Occasionally exposed to moderate/harsh weather conditions; requires work be done both inside and outside.

Noise level: The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, but the employee may be exposed to varying levels of noise at times when in the field or at the Red Dog Mine.

Description of environment: Incumbent must be able to work in less-than-ideal offices, facilities, or situations. In the field the employee will be required to walk over uneven terrain, for periods up to an hour or longer, and may be exposed to loud machinery.

Physical requirements:  Employee is required to occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 lbs while traversing several miles under various weather conditions. Frequently required to sit, stand, walk, use hands/fingers to handle or feel, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk/hear, see, taste/smell, and carry weight/lift.

Travel: Up to 50% of the time.  Employee may travel to remote areas, such as the Red Dog Mine or in the NANA Region and may be required to use alternative modes of transportation, including but not limited to snow machines, boats, helicopters, small airplanes and ATVs.
